
Japanese Language Program for International Students
Gifu Keizai University is committed to promoting internationalization and international academic exchange. For this purpose we enroll foreign students as undergraduate students and graduate students. Our university also has Japanese Language Courses for foreign students who plan to apply for admission to Japanese universities. These courses are divided into classes according to their levels. It is our goal that students can acquire Japanese fluency, make steady progress in their studies and also understand Japanese culture and society.
Outline of Japanese Language Course
This course starts in April and finishes in March. We accept new students in April.
Curriculum and Subjects
Japanese Language Study
Most of the subjects which students study here are focused on acquiring enough language ability to enter Japanese universities. They take language tests at the beginning of the course and are divided into two levels, elementary level and intermediate level in the first semester. In the second semester they study in the intermediate class or advanced class.
Japanese Culture Study(Multi-Cultural Understanding)
Students acquire basic knowledge of Japanese culture and society in order to study and live comfortably. Students who have studied English before can continue studying English and also learn foreign cultures.

Goals for the Classes
- Elementary Class
The goal for Listening and Speaking classes is to give students the ability to communicate in Japanese about basic things in everyday life. The goal for the Reading and Writing classes is to give students the ability to read and understand basic things in everyday life and to write and express basic functions.
At the end of the course students will be expected to understand 1500〜2000 words, and read and write Hiragana, Katakana, and the basic 500 Kanji. They should be able to pass the 3rd level of Japanese Proficiency Test.
- Intermediate Class
The goal for Listening and Speaking classes is to provide students with the ability to communicate in Japanese in more complex situations. The goal for the Reading classes is to provide students with the ability to read and understand sentences, deriving the meaning from the context, and to read written materials, such as newspapers and magazines. The goal for the Writing classes is to enable the students to write well-organized compositions using all sentence patterns that they have studied.
At the end of the course students will be expected to understand 5000〜6000 words, and read and write 1000〜1500 Kanji. They should be able to pass the 2nd level of Japanese Proficiency Test and to attain at least 190 points on the Ryugaku-shiken (the examination for entering universities in Japan).
- Advanced Class
The goal for Listening and Speaking classes is to give students the ability not only to communicate with Japanese people practically in daily life but also to understand news and general culture topics and to give opinions about those. The goal for the Reading classes is to give students the ability to read newspapers, books of general education, books in various text styles using dictionaries. The goal for Writing classes is to give students the ability to write summaries, advanced composition and reports.
At the end of the course students will be expected to understand 10000 words, and read and write 2000 Kanji. They should be able to pass the 1st level of Japanese Proficiency Test and attain at least 220 points on the Ryugaku-shiken, and admitted to universities.
Completion
Students who have taken 31 units will obtain a certificate of the completion of this Japanese language course.
Measures to go to Universities
- Our courses are specially designed for the preparation to enter universities in Japan. Students can have practical training for Ryugaku-shiken which people who want to enter universities are required to take (for most universities). According to their score students can be admitted to our university or choose another university.
- Students doing well in the course can be admitted on the strength of recommendations from this language course.
